I loved my last fridge magnets so much, and the fact that they were so fun to make, I made more. This time, I found some background patterns on the internet, customized the colours of the patterns, and printed them with a laser colour printer on thick white cardstock paper.
Each of these squares measures 1.5″. I then tried the Mod Podge to glue the clear flat glass beads to the design. It worked well. Make sure you use enough that solid contact is made iwth the paper, and all air bubbles are able to be “squished” out. I let these dry overnight as you see below.
I also made two alphabet sets of magnets. One in yellow and pink, and the other with turquoise and red. I used Adobe Illustrator to make the background pattern, and chose a funky font letter for each magnet. I used ModPodge for this set as well, and let it dry overnight.
When the glass is glued down, and dry, I then painted a coat or two directly onto the back of the paper to seal the back side of the magnets. This was easier to do when they are all still on one sheet of paper. I then waited to that to dry completely.
I then used a cutting mat to cut a grid on the paper and separate all the letters into individual squares. Then I used an exacto knife to carve off the excess paper, and well as any dried glue that oozed out. This part is much easier if you have done the step of sealing the back of the paper with ModPodge. The ModPodge gives the paper more rigidness to be able to make clean slices with the exacto knife. Also you will save yourself lots of headaches if you have a brand new sharp blade in it.
TEST your magnet to see if one side of it sticks better to your fridge. Some magnets are more magnetic on one side due to their north and south poles. Now paint a dollop of ModPodge onto the non magnetic side and attach it to the back of the magnet, and let it dry overnight.
When laying out your magnets to dry, spread them out away each other about 2″ apart. Otherwise they will move by themselves to magnetize to each other, and you will have a mess of glass magnets and glue everywhere! Yes, I did that.
If you would like to make the set above, I am offering you a free download of the pdf file I designed in Illustrator. Print this off on a colour laser printer on cardstock for best results.
You will also need:
- small clear flattened glass beads
- ModPodge
- small fridge magnets
- exacto knife.
Note: These are not suitable for children. The glass could break and shatter if they are dropped on hard tile floors, or children may injest them.

How cute! I wish my fridge was magnetic on the front because I would totally be stealing your idea! partying w/ you from CSI
love your guts

Those are really cute! I’ve seen the glass magnets before, but I LOVE the alphabet idea! Thanks for sharing! (and thanks for the tutorial! I’ve never known how they were made).
came over from the CSI project.
That is so awesome!!
